Senior Software Engineer
Job Summary
Full-time: 37.5 Hours per week, Monday to Friday
Location: Ottawa Office (Up to 3 days per week), 70 Laurier Ave West, Suite 310, Ottawa, ON K1P 5V5 and Ottawa-based Home Office, or, remote if located outside of the National Capital Region.
Reporting To: Team Leader, Software Engineering
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to join the Larus team as a Software Engineer. Our Software Engineering team is currently developing end-to-end real-time solutions for the public safety and security industries. This includes data interfacing, collection, aggregation, display, exploitation, and fusion functionalities. As a member of the Software Engineering team, you will design and develop software modules within an existing product. You should expect to work on a wide variety of software problems and learn and apply new skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable, distributed software systems;
- Design, develop, integrate, and test software modules and systems;
- Advocate high-quality and best-practices in software design and development;
- Interface development for various protocols, data formats and logical connections;
- Close interaction with other team members on system integration and validation;
- Participate in all aspects of the software development process including planning, retrospectives, and demos;
- Meeting assigned goals with the team and releasing deliverables to stakeholders and customers; and,
- Other duties as assigned.

Expected qualifications include:
- University degree in Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science or other related Engineering degree;
- Required to meet qualifications to obtain a Canadian Government security clearance (typically requires the candidate to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada);
- 7-10+ years of direct experience in design, development, deployment, and verification of software, with at least 2-3 years in Java;
- Experience with creating software documentation and other forms of technical writing;
- Experience in developing and debugging high-performance software;
- Experience in security-oriented software design principles;
- Experience in designing REST APIs;
- Experience with databases, including SQL and document stores;
- Experience using source control such as Git and build tools such as Gradle;
- Experience with different OS (Windows, Linux);
- Experience in one or more virtual machines, Kubernetes, containerization, cloud platforms;
- Excellent computer and manual problem analysis, evaluation, and resolution skills;
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills;
- Passion for learning and solving complex problems;
- Strong communication skills;
- Experience in Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CICD) Systems;
- Organized and focused; and,
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment;
Preferred Technical Skills:
- Experience with shell scripts;
- Experience with object-oriented design;
- Experience with Python, JavaScript and TypeScript;
- Design diagram creation (UML, flowcharts, dataflow diagrams, etc);
- Knowledge of cyber security best practices;
- Concurrent, message-driven, distributed applications;
- Large dataset processing and analysis;
- Knowledge of computer networking;
- Provide guidance and mentorship and lead technical discussions;
- Use or develop GIS software; and
- Develop automated testing tools or define test cases.
